In Zimbabwe like the rest of the world, marketing has changed from one-way communication to a living two-way interaction with the customer. Web sites and social media platforms like pinterest and twitter have seen many companies manage client feedback in real time and improve on their brand.
If your business doesn’t have an active web site, get started now. Most Zimbabwean small business owners are so immersed in their own operations that they forget that it’s not obvious to others that they close early on Saturdays or a direction Google map to their location can come in handy. A web site is the perfect place to share these small insights—which can help bring you more business.
Most small business owners in Zimbabwe are scared away from having an online presence by a lot of internet jargon and coding that they are made to believe hinders the ordinary man from creating a website. Far from it. You don’t need to know css or html to create and run a start-up website. Online is the first place people look for information on businesses today and thus web presence is a necessity. For sole traders, farmers and other small businesses, I recommend they open a simple site through blogger or wordpress.com.
They can use these platforms to write simple short articles which they cannot put on their fliers and profiles. After seeing the impact of these free services, one can then buy a domain name and get paid hosting. After all, hosting is not expensive.
As I highlighted in my earlier post, the internet is the only place where a company registered today can compete directly and fairly with a big multinational company started 15 years ago.
